Why do we care so much? Besides weather prediction, there are some other offbeat facts surrounding this kooky holiday that you need to know.
Groundhogs actually can predict spring, but not with a shadow. As hibernating creatures, a groundhog naturally emerging from the burrow would generally signify that the ground has warmed, and spring is on the way. And February 2 isn’t an arbitrary date. Because it’s the midpoint between the winter solstice and the spring solstice, it’s an ideal time to check for an early spring.
